SALISBURY, MD – Sports Destination Management, the leading publication with the largest circulation of sports event planners and tournament directors in the sports tourism market, has announced the 2018 Champions of Economic Impact in Sports Tourism. This year’s winners are responsible for contributing more than $700 million to the national economy over the past year.
Among the winners was the Governor’s Challenge, produced by Wicomico County.
The Governor’s Challenge has grown to be the largest holiday basketball tournament in the country. In its 38th year, the Governor’s Challenge will bring nearly 120 teams from 14 states and Canada to the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center, the University of Maryland – Eastern Shore and surrounding high schools on Dec. 26-29, 2018.
This year's format will include a DMVelite Showcase division, which includes 26 top teams, a varsity boys division, varsity girls division and girls showcase division.
The Governor’s Challenge generated an $2.8 million economic impact in 2017.
